BACKGROUND – Tourism development is not just a priority area for the Federal Government of Pakistan but Government of Gilgit-Baltistan is also committed to promote tourism potential of Pakistan’s northern region.
VISION – to initiate Sporting Event of National Scale and International Scope in GB so as to extend Tourism Season, Diversify Tourism activities and Enrich Tourists’ Experience.
STRATEGY – Various initiatives have been conceived to develop tourism as industry and attract National and International tourists. Towards this end, Government of Gilgit-Baltistan has planned to organize Sarfaranga Cold Desert Rally at Baltistan.

i) Building image of Pakistan and Gilgit-Baltistan as a Travelling Destination.
ii) Extending Tourist Season in GB beyond Summer Season.
iii) Creating International Level Sporting Events in Gilgit-Baltistan
iv) Showcasing the Cultural Diversity of Gilgit-Baltistan.
v) Building and Enhancing the Real Image of Pakistan.
WHY AT SARFARANGA – Sarfaranga is one of the highest Cold Desert in the World at 7500ft. It is surrounded by the peaks of Karakoram. It has a beautiful lake (Blind Lake), Indus River flows along the desert and is also considered as Gateway to K-2. With such unique features at one place, the venue is not just geographically unique nationally but internationally. Additionally, it would provide a platform for profiling and showcasing the indigenous Culture, Cuisine and Arts & Crafts of Gilgit-Baltistan to a National and International audience.

SCOPE OF SARFARANGA – The strategy for this Event is to mobilise the communities of Gilgit-Baltistan behind it and not just reduce its scope to some government financed and organised Sporting Event for a few. The financing of the Event is hybrid. Part government and part sponsorship. The government part is bare minimum.
SARFARANGA the Event – is a jeep and bikes rally that at 7500 ft is one of the most technically challenging. At the altitude of SARFARANGA the engine combustion reduces by 25% and because of low pressure not only the tyres behave tricky but the drivers feel short of breath. Last year more than 80 top competitors from all over Pakistan participated. For this year the registration has exceeded 100.

SARFARANGA the Experience – coming to Sarfaranga is much more than going to any other desert rally. By driving all the way to one of the highest cold desert in the world, the traveller passes through several tourist destinations and attractions. Himalayas, Hindukash and Karakoram converge in this region. Rama, Deosai, Sadpara and Kachura Lakes are along the way to SARFARANGA. The cold desert is within thirty minutes of the airport, Serena Shigar Fort and Shangri-la besides other hotels, lakes and waterfalls. Its a Desert Rally that the whole family can plan their annual holiday around.

SARFARANGA the Event is just one part of the SARFARANGA the Experience.
SARFARANGA the Celebration – is the idea that much more than a sporting event it is a Celebration for the region of Baltistan. It is not an event just for the jeeping enthusiasts but everyone in the society has several attractions for him or her. Polo, Tent Pegging, Zakh Rafting Competition and a rich dose of cultural music and dance are part of the Celebration. Every community and school of thought would be included in the Celebration. Everything that is attractive in Baltistan shall be showcased on the sidelines of the Event. It is not some government’s event but a People’s festival, People’s Celebration.
Looking Forward to Seeing You at SARFARANGA.
